Joyful

Flowers blooming in Spring,
unfurling in a riotous fling,
the chance to practise good,
to ask, to feel, to be understood.
A wink, a nod, a hand outstretched,
It’s better alive than playing dead.
Letting go of pages that weigh,
staying present in the book of today.
Who knows if tomorrow will come,
wiser to savour this moment’s sweet hum.
Being joyful is a choice to make,
will you live and stay awake?

Every Day Astonishes Me

In a world riven with greed, hatred,
ignorance and fear, the moments that
enchant are the moments that uplift,
jewels of jubilance to treasure and
nurture. There you were on the other side
of the road as I ambled back from
the shops, merely going about your
daily business – stately, graceful, walking
with ease, at one with the world.
So enamoured was I by the felicity
of your presence, an urge to say “hello”
came over me, dazzled by the elegance
you exuded. My heart is still smiling
at the sweet serendipity of this meeting.
Every day astonishes me.

Noticing

You look out of the window
and notice a cat
all clad in black
elegant in stature
regal in presence
questioning you
as if to say
“What are you doing here?”
This is a question
you often ask of yourself.
Any answers that arrive
soon slide into
life’s minutiae.
Meanwhile
the sleek trespasser
trots off nonchalantly
a riddle in motion
and you settle down
quite contentedly
to your third cup of tea
on a deliciously
whimsical day.
